Writer Wednesday ~ Author Interview with Emily Mims ~ Solomon's Choice

Author Interview
Emily Mims

Do you use a pen name?  Not anymore.  I used ‘Emily Elliott’ for my Candlelight romances back in the 1980’s when I had a teaching job to protect.

What is your favorite thing about being a writer?  Bringing all these wonderful people residing in my imagination to life!

What type of scene give you the most satisfaction when you write?  A good, emotional argument where some serious home truths are exchanged.

What genre do you write?  Romantic suspense that is heavier on the romance than the suspense.

What is the hardest part about being a writer?  Sitting down with that Big Chief pad and coming up with a believable plot.  I am so not a pantser!  I have to know exactly where the story is going to end up before I write a single word.

How does your family view your writing?  My children grew up thinking everybody’s mommy wrote five page love scenes.  They’re grown now and still don’t think it particularly unusual.  My husband wears a T-shirt emblazoned with ‘I make love to a romance writer’ and usually looks like the cat that ate the canary.

I love that! Go hubby! Do you let them read it? Why/Why not?  I’m not sure if the boys have actually read any of them but my female relatives sure have.  My son’s lady co-workers threatened to buy the book and read him the love scenes out loud on his lunch hour.

LOL! When did you first publish? 1983

What type of books do you prefer to read?  Same thing I write.  I also love love love paranormals in any shape or form.  I like some historicals, futuristic work, slightly-in-the-future doomsday stuff (a plague has to be stopped before it infects the world, etc.), and I love to sit down with a good magazine or cookbook.

What did you do before becoming a writer?  I spent 39 years teaching science and actually combined the teaching and the writing for a long time.

What is the best thing about your life?  Being retired and able to call my time my own.

What is the worst thing about your life?  Facing my own mortality.

Do you use any of your personal experiences in your stories?  Well, my very first book was about a brilliant biologist and the sexy photographer she needed to take pictures for her….but I have never made love standing up in the Yellow River in Vietnam.  Does that answer that question?

How many do you have published?  Eighteen for Candlelight, Solomon’s Choice for Boroughs, Daughter of Valor will be out in March, and two short stories and a third novel coming up also with Boroughs.  So 19 with 4 more on the way.

If you were able to do any career, what would it be?  I’m doing it!  I love to write because I can live almost any career vicariously through the books.  The only other career I look at longingly would be that of a professional musician, but I do that on an amateur basis already. (I play in 2 performing groups.)

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?  Hmmm.  I haven’t traveled nearly enough so there would be a lot of possibilities here.  Stonehenge?  Back to the Caribbean?  Back to Hawaii?  South Pacific?  Car tour of US and Canada?  The astronomical observatories in Chile?  Give me a map and a dart and I’ll let you know.

What would be your ultimate car to own? (I’m a bit of a motorhead!)  Another hmmm.  We already own the neatest little MX-5 (that’s a Miata) and run all over hell and gone in it.  We are hoping to get a new one in 2016 when they change the model a little.  With a car, it’s gotta be fun and make me feel 10 years younger when I get in it.

What country do you live in? USA.  More specifically, San Antonio.  And we spend a lot of time at a lake place that just might, might resemble the lakeside community of Heaven’s Point!

What is the best thing about where you live?  Mild winters and hot Mexican food.

Thank you Emily! It's been wonderful getting to know a little bit more about you.

Now, take a look at Emily's newest offering.

Solomon's Choice
