Author Interview:

Do you use a pen name?
Not yet.

What is your favorite thing about being a writer?
Not including the actual writing part (which is wonderful) ~ not having to set an alarm clock and not having to wait for a bus when the temperature is below zero.

What type of scene give you the most satisfaction when you write?
Crazy flawed characters doing crazy flawed things.

What genre do you write?
With short stories I pretty much stick to horror and speculative fiction; novels are mystery and suspense thrillers. I have no explanation as to why that is. I do have plans for a horror novel ~ we’ll see how that goes.

What is the hardest part about being a writer?
Marketing.

I hear you there! How does your family view your writing?
Some relatives look at me a little odd, but they are all very supportive.  When I got my first short story published about souls going down a river to another realm, I showed my mom. In true Minnesota fashion she said, “That was ...interesting.”

Do you let them read it?
If there’s a section I’m having a problem with, I’ll ask my wife to look at it. She’s a great sounding board. Otherwise I’m pretty secretive of my work ~ I don’t like to share until it’s published. Besides, they think I’m weird enough already.

When did you first publish?
My first short story was published in 1994. My first novel was published in 2010.

What type of books do you prefer to read?
It depends on my mood. Mostly mystery and suspense with an occasional biography. Still looking for a horror novel that scares the hell out of me.

What did you do before becoming a writer?
I was a Judicial Court Clerk for Hennepin County.

Do you use any of your personal experiences in your stories?
Oh yeah.

How many do you have published?
Three novels, two books of short stories and a number of short stories in magazines and anthologies.

If you were able to do any career, what would it be?
In my younger days ~ a rock star. I was in a couple of rock bands in high school and college ~ a great time. Now ~ I’m writing and loving it.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would love space travel.

Interesting. What would be your ultimate car to own? (I’m a bit of a motorhead!)
Have they invented one that flies yet? Something with turbo lasers to zap texters while driving.

What country do you live in?
USA

What is the best thing about where you live?
Autumn

I'm sure it's beautiful up there about now. Thank you so much for sharing with us David.

About the Author-
During the summer months when the sun is shining and birds are singing, David is perfectly content to sit in his office, with blinds drawn, typing away at the computer. His favorite day of the year is the first day toward the end of summer that’s cool enough to pull a flannel shirt from the closet.

As a student at the University of Minnesota, David realized that if he switched his major from journalism to speech, he could graduate that quarter. It was a no-brainer. After 24 years of working in the court system, he walked away to write full time – another no-brainer.

Two Degrees Closer to Hell will be his second collection of short stories. He has also written three other novels.

David is married and lives in Minneapolis.
