Blogging from A to Z: Zombie

http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/

Z is for Zombie

Zombie books are okay but I love Zombie Movies! Zombieland has the most important rules for survival!
A love story I really enjoyed was Warm Bodies.
Wouldn't you want hope that a cure could be found?

I do prefer my zombies with a bit of humor.
Have you seen Shaun of the Dead.
A dry witted spoof

Then there is the Walking Dead on TV. I don't need a clip of that I'm sure. I do prefer a full movie rather than seasons long shows, but that is just me.

So,
Z is for Zombies!

Thank you for following my alphabetical journey this month. I hope I managed to entertain you!

Blogging from A to Z: Yarrow

Y is for Yarrow
I'm interested in herbal plants and remedies. I'm not fond of the modern take a pill for everything.

I knew Yarrow had medicinal qualities so I looked it up to share.

Poo poo the idea of herbal remedies? Where to you think modern pharmaceuticals get their ideas? Many of the modern remedies had their roots from herbs.

Yarrow is a flowering perennial, common in North America but also native to Europe and Asia. Its leaves are soft and highly segmented with a characteristic appearance that is almost feather-like. Yarrow grows stalks during the summer months, with a height that is dependent upon the seasonal rainfall. During dry years, these stalks may only grow a foot or two, preserving energy in its roots. Clusters of tiny white flowers grow atop the stalks, emitting a distinctive and characteristic aroma.

Yarrow received its Latin name Achillea from the legendary Greek hero Achilles. According to the common legend, Achilles’s mother dipped him into the river Styx by the ankle in an effort to make him invulnerable. Fighting many battles as a seemingly invincible warrior, Achilles used yarrow to treat the wounds of his fellow soldiers. He later died from a wound to his heel, as it was the one unprotected part of his anatomy.

Benefits of Yarrow:

Yarrow  is helpful in relieving fevers, shortening the duration of cold and flu, helping improve relaxation during illness, and relieving cramps associated with hormones or illness. Applied topically, it is helpful with skin itching, rash or other issues.

An external tincture or poultice will often help with hemorrhoids, rashes and broken skin. Some people will notice relief from allergy symptoms by drinking a tea of yarrow and mint

A Modern Herbal by Mrs. M. Grieve:

Yarrow is a diaphoretic, astringent, tonic, stimulant and mild aromatic.

Yarrow Tea is a good remedy for severe colds, being most useful in the commencement of fevers, and in cases of obstructed perspiration. The infusion is made with 1 OZ. of dried herb to 1 pint of boiling water, drunk warm, in wineglassful doses. It may be sweetened with sugar, honey or treacle, adding a little Cayenne Pepper, and to each dose a teaspoonful of Composition Essence. It opens the pores freely and purifies the blood, and is recommended in the early stages of children's colds, and in measles and other eruptive diseases.

A decoction of the whole plant is employed for bleeding piles, and is good for kidney disorders. It has the reputation also of being a preventative of baldness, if the head be washed with it.

If for some reason, man made medicine can no longer be manufactured, the need to know about herbal remedies will skyrocket. Be prepared. Have a book on herbs readily available in your supplies. It could be the difference between life and death. Or the difference between a bland meal and one seasoned to melt in your mouth.

I can't remember which one I have. It is one of two. I'm not sure where I put mine, possibly in the kitchen with my cook books!

Blogging from A to Z: Xenophobia

X is for Xenophobia

xenophobia /ˌzɛnəˈfoʊbijə/ /ˌziːnəˈfoʊbijə/ noun
Learner's definition of XENOPHOBIA
[noncount]
: fear or hatred of strangers or foreigners

— xenophobe

 /ˈzɛnəˌfoʊb/ /ˈziːnəˌfoʊb/  noun, pluralxenophobes [count]

— xenophobic

/ˌzɛnəˈfoʊbɪk/ /ˌziːnəˈfoʊbɪk/  adjective [more xenophobic; most xenophobic]

Fear of strangers. Isn't that what we teach our children? Stranger Danger?

I know I did. My daughter won't talk to strangers even today. Of course that is only when she doesn't want to. But she isn't fond of it.

I never had the fear of foreigners. I love to travel and want to see more of the world than I already have.

I have to wonder if xenophobia is why so many people are shy. Fear. Fear of someone or something unknown. It would make sense.

My father on the other hand has never met a stranger-only a friend he has yet to meet.

Are you like my daughter and me? Or are you like my father-waiting to find friends?

Blogging from A to Z: Werewolf

W is for Werewolf

From Lon Chaney Jr. to Taylor Lautner werewolves have caught and held our imaginations.

I think the first one that really caught and fired my imagination was An American Werewolf in London.

The transformation scene made it look real.

So I always wonder. Living in Wisconsin with woods and land everywhere who knows what could be out there.

Lori Handeland set some of her werewolf books in Wisconsin. Carrie Ann Ryan has her Redwood Pack and there are way too many werewolf romances to list.

What do you think?

Could they be real?

Who is your favorite werewolf? Horror or Romance?

Blogging from A to Z: Vampire

V is for Vampire
Since Bela Lugosi came on the scene as Dracula, Vampires fascinate our culture.
Check out all the info at Wikipedia!
Fascinating!

Based on the legend of Vlad Tepes also known as Vlad the Impaler a blood thirsty prince of Wallachia.

He however isn't the charismatic vampire that we have grown to know, and dare I say, love.

The charismatic and sophisticated vampire of modern fiction was born in 1819 with the publication of The Vampyre by John Polidori; the story was highly successful and arguably the most influential vampire work of the early 19th century.[2] However, it is Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula which is remembered as the quintessential vampire novel and provided the basis of the modern vampire legend. The success of this book spawned a distinctive vampire genre, still popular in the 21st century, with books, films, and television shows. The vampire has since become a dominant figure in the horror genre. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire

But those of us who read romance know that the vampire is not just a face of horror. He is a main staple in our vision of romance. Brought to our hearts in books like the Black Dagger Brotherhood, the Carpathians in the Dark Series and of course our big screen, toss our hands up in the air vampire we love to hate (and love!) Twilight.
Just they're just like us! Love baseball and everything!

Blogging from A to Z: Unknown

U is for Unknown

Ghosts and demons and things that go bump in the night. Here's a little something I wrote about the evil I felt, the unknown danger I felt creeping around me.

I hurried down the walkway, through the lilac bushes and listening to the rustle of the oak trees as their unspoken voices urged me to hurry. The moon glistened in little spots of glitter as it found holes to light my way through the over growth.

I twisted the door knob and pushed, tumbling quickly into the house. I whirled and slammed the door. Anger pulsating in the night as the door prevented entry. The family room was quiet, the only light the embers in the fireplace. Shivering, I headed to my room.

I opened the door enough to squeeze through and closed it quickly. I switched on the light and turned the lock on my door. The blue roses covering my walls brought me a measure of peace. I turned. Shuddering I quickly made my way to the windows. One by one I closed the blinds and pulled the curtains, making sure not a speck of darkness made its way into my room. Scared of the evil lurking outside.

I sat in the corner, as far away as I could from the windows. I was the only one home. I could feel the malevolence surrounding the windows. I could feel the unseen eyes staring at me. The unseen hands trying to get in.

Quickly, I retreated to the one place I felt safe. Closing the door to the closet, I sat. Ensconced in darkness I felt safe. Safe from the evil wanting in.

Have you ever lived somewhere scared of the malevolence that only you could feel? What unknown are you frightened of?

Blogging from A to Z: TEOTWAWKI

TEOTWAWKI: (acronym). "The End Of The World As We Know It."
James Wesley Rawles gets credit for this phrase, which has become extremely popular with Preppers. His book "How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It: Tactics, Techniques, and Technologies for Uncertain Times."

- See more at: http://www.happypreppers.com/dictionary.html#sthash.AqnSPEhY.dpuf

It's hard to think that this might possibly happen. Would you really feel fine? Would you rather be prepared or suffer with what might happen?
Maybe it won't happen in our life time.

I feel better just knowing some of the things I could do. Simple things. Do you know the rule of three?
  • Three minutes without air
  • Three days without water
  • Three weeks without food
Can you survive? Unless you're a scuba diver and keep air on hand, or have some time of air filtration system, and not many can afford that, in a disaster it is more important NOT to panic. You use up more oxygen that way. Slow and steady and look around, just a trickle of fresh air will keep you going.

If you are trapped with no way to water, you have three days. If you always have water at hand, you have a better chance at survival.

As I think of this I imagine being trapped by a collapsed building. I lived in California for years where the earthquakes made this a distinct possibility. Now I live in the Midwest and have the same thoughts due to tornadoes.

I usually have a water bottle at hand so maybe I'd last three days. I know prepping is more about TEOTWAWKI but I tend to focus more on what would happen in a natural disaster. Really, being prepared for one is no joke. If you've never woken up with your walls shaking and your possessions dropping to the floor and shattering, kudos to you!

If you've never hid in the basement as the sky turns green and the sirens go off listening to the hail shatter against your house, again, kudos. When that happens, we race to get water jugs filled and head to the basement to shelter with the spiders. The candles in the lanterns get lit or we get out the flashlights that require no batteries-because you know when you need them, they're always dead!

Those are just a taste of things that could happen. With water, food, light and blankets for warmth, we'd get through. With a bug out bag or go bag we could grab we'd be even more prepared. Think Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory. Fill up that old backpack with essentials and keep it handy.

Just in case, you know, shit really hits the fan (SHTF) and it really becomes the end of the world as we know it TEOTWAWKI!

There are even songs about it? Remember this one?

Blogging from A to Z: Survival

S is for Survival
We all want to do it! Some prepare for it better than others.  I'm not going to go on about it. What I am going to do is share some videos on survival.

Have you thought about it? It's a bit of an obsession with me, but not necessarily how you think. I obsess about the AFTER. When those that initially survive figure out that life has truly changed. What happens next?

I assume some will survive. Man is like cockroaches. There are too many of us to kill off altogether. So my obsession took me in a different direction, bringing back myths and legends to live once again among man.

Stealing Hope A Dragon's Fated Heart is the culmination of that obsession.

But first we have to survive! Here are a few interesting videos I've found. Have I mentioned I love youtube?

Too bad I'm allergic to birch bark!
Here is one on how to build a shelter

Here's one attempt at making a B.O.B.

I hope these helped! If you go to youtube and type in survival you'll get a whole bunch of helpful hints.

Blogging from A to Z: Romance

R is for Romance

I love romance. It is the genre I read the most, though not exclusively. I love my HEA (happily ever after) which is what I always get with romance.

RWA (Romance Writers of America) define romance as:
"Two basic elements comprise every romance novel: a central love story and an emotionally-satisfying and optimistic ending."

Romance is different to everyone.

Romance can be dancing to a slow song while he sings in your ear. I'll never forget this song.

Me being me, I sang back this one to him as I danced and teased him as he laughed and finally spun me around only to have me end in his arms as the rest of the world melted away.

Romance is what you make it.

What is your most remembered romantic moment?

Blogging From A to Z: Quality or Quantity?

Q is for Quality or Quantity

Which do you prefer? Do you prefer to have the writers you love churn out books so you don't run out?  Don't you expect to fall in love with them?

Too often I have read stories that obviously have been put out for quantity. Sometimes in those I find a gem. Good quality entertainment.

I'm slow, I try to make sure you get quality for your entertainment. Good grammer, proper sentence structure and a story line you can follow. POV (point of view) that doesn't jump from person to person in a scene.

I have my faults, I know. NO I'm not going to list them. If you haven't noticed then that's all good! It helps that I have wonderful editors, and publishing houses that use copy editors to make sure that the words are spelled correctly and I'm using the right (write, lol) words.

So, maybe one day I'll be able to right faster so I'll have a large quantity and they'll be quality reads.

You can check out my books and decide for yourself at www.beverlyovalle.com for links to all my books.

Blogging from A to Z: Preppers

                                               http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/

P is for Preppers

Preppers are people who actively prepare for survival in uncertain times, including an economic collapse, natural disaster, unusual cosmic event, pandemic, or man made catastrophe. Preppers take significant action to prepare life's basic needs before the unthinkable should occur, which would disrupt
normal living conditions. Prepping is a lifestyle that provides comfort and peace of  mind. While their passion and skill level vary their ultimate goal is the same: survival in living off the grid.

P-repare for any natural or man made disaster.
R-espond without fear.
E-valuate every possible scenario.
P-ack supplies like you won't have 'em for a year.
P-lan for the unexpected.
E-nvision a happy outcome.
R-emember to always have hope!

Happy Preppers have a great definition, don't they? You definitely have to have goals and be organized. Not into the who TEOTWAWKI scene? (the end of the world as we know it).  Prepare yourself for the natural disasters where you live.

Want to be one that helps in the event? Most counties have disaster teams that are made up of many volunteers. Think Red Cross, Volunteer fire fighters, etc.

Just be ready. You don't have to have hundreds of extra dollars. Do things our grandparents once did. Grow your own food and can it. Freezing is fine until the power goes out. Have a generator and a supply of fuel to keep your electricity running. But canning can be done to just about any food.

Canning not your thing? I admit I suck at it. :) I keep trying though. Try dehydrating your food instead. You don't even need a dehydrator. Here is a video that shows you how that I found on youtube. I love youtube.

So get prepared for anything. Have food stored for those slim times or those times when disaster might strike. Don't think you have room for a garden? Check out my pinterest page where I show different ways to container garden in a small space.

You can also check out my post at https://adragonsfatedheart.wordpress.com/2015/03/24/starting-a-garden-breaking-your-dependence-stealinghope/ where I talk about starting a garden, the first step for independence which is this Prepper's goal!

Blogging from A to Z: Organize

O is for Organize

Truly that is the last thing I am. I'm so not organized that I'm doing this post shortly before it goes up!

Planning and getting ready for anything requires it. Setting up a book or a plot takes organization. Writing paranormal requires world building and believe me, I have to be organized. In the series I'm writing I have to make sure the personalities, the setting and the physical characteristics remain the same throughout.

I finally broke down and created a worksheet. I had to remember what dragon had what colors for their scales. I had to make sure the names and matched the hair and eyes. That the dragons when they shifted always looked the same.

I had to write up the skills of their mates and make sure the timelines in all of the books meshed. Way too much organization, but I had to do it to ensure that each book was cohesive and the time progression is the same so that the timelines didn't cross over and overlap.

Ugh! I find it hard but to create the worlds I want, I have to learn.

So hopefully you find that me learning to organize creates a world that you enjoy.

A Dragon's Fated Heart series comes out in August 2015.

Blogging from A to Z: Northern Dragons

http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/
N is for Northern Dragons

Most often you hear of the Western or Chinese Dragons. Most of those are fairly recognizable. But you have to go where the cold and snow make humans uncomfortable to find the Northern Dragon. Northern Dragons are better known as Ice Dragons, Snow Dragons, perhaps Frost Dragons or even Icelandic Wyrms.

As a student and member of the Secret and Ancient Society of Dragonologists I can’t tell you everything.

Just know, if it’s pale and cold has four legs and full wings you have probably found yourself a Frost Dragon. If you find yourself in their lair do NOT try to light a fire, especially if there are eggs around. They must be kept at a chilly 15 degrees Fahrenheit. If you tamper with them you can expect to receive an icy blast from their dam.

Snow Dragons can move anywhere volcanoes can protect their young while the icy outer layer can keep eggs cool.

Intrigued?

It’s easy to become a student of Dragonology if you believe.

Meet my American Dragons in Stealing Hope. Descended from the Draco occ. Magnus they have changed little over the years in their dragon forms. Unknown to many they can also change and walk among men.

Stealing Hope A Dragon’s Fated Heart coming to you in August of this year.

Blogging from A to Z: Motherhood

M is for Motherhood

I struggled with a topic for M and then I watched NCIS: New Orleans tonight.
I realized that the one thing that meant the most to me was my children.

WHAT?
I'll connect the dots.
It was about a kidnapped baby. It brought home to me something I would never give up. Something that meant more to me than even my own life.
My children. They bring meaning to my life.

I wasn't a stay at home mom. Children sometimes can drive me crazy, but my own never did. Until they were teenagers, of course. Everyone said I was laid back as a mom. If they weren't killing each other I figured it was all good.

Aren't they precious?
We never went on a vacation that didn't include our children.

We had some wonderful moments.

We have a beautiful and loving family

Despite the distances between us.

And the goofiness that are my children!

Neither one lives with us still but we enjoy our times together.

They make me proud.

My daughter is about to embark on her own journey of motherhood.
I wish her all the joy that my children brought me. Even the pull my hair out teenage years that they obviously made it through intact.

My husband and I must have done something right.
They are our greatest joy in life.
They inspire me.

The most wonderful letter in the alphabet has to be M for motherhood.

Blogging from A to Z: Lust, er, Love

L is for Lust, er, Love
Yeah that's what I meant!

The pounding heart, the flutter in her stomach, the shivers that run up her spine as her body tightens and her breath shortens. She wants to feel the roughness of his hands tightening on her hips, the hardness of his frame against the rounded edges of hers.

He wants to run his hands over her curves, taste the sweetness of her lips, feel the softness of her skin. He wants to feel the give of her body as it melts into his, the hitch in her breath as he touches her there.

Lust, at first sight.

Can there be love without lust? Sure, but don't you want that overwhelming response to the one you come to love? How can it lead to love if you don't want to taste the edge of his lips, run your fingers through his hair and feel his body press you down? The heart stopping responses excite your interest.

If nothing catches your interest how can you be willing to get to know him? How can nothingness lead to love? Attraction, lust, hunger and then more...

LOVE...

Blogging From A to Z: Kisses

K is for Kisses
Some of the kisses are 18+

“No problem.” Nick kissed her on the nose and headed to the connecting door. It was unlocked. “You mean I could have gone in and had my way with you earlier?” Nick had a wicked grin on his face.

Releasing her nipple, he kissed his way down her body. He moved between the juncture of her thighs. Spreading her lips with his hands, he exposed her secrets to his view. He leaned forward and ran his tongue through her softness, stabbing into her heat. She groaned. He raised his head and placed a kiss upon her throbbing clit, flicking his tongue on it as he did. She squirmed beneath him. He stopped and sucked her clit into his mouth. She bowed and screamed.

He loomed above the bed, and the silver of his eyes gleamed like moonlight as he stared down at her. His mouth descended. That kiss took her breath: the feel of his lips as they shaped hers, soft and determined. The trace of his tongue demanding sweet entrance sent a wave of heat throughout her body. She yearned to deepen the kiss. She didn't dare.

I have more kisses coming!

Blogging From A to Z: Joy

J is for Joy!

Joy when inspiration strikes and you just know that it is a good thing.
Joy when life seems to jump out and embrace you.

Joy when you want to get something out and when you do, it strikes just the right note.

Joy oh Joy!

Here's a snippet that brought me joy. The working title is Swamp Story, LOL.

Brant smiled and laughed at the camera. The red light came on signaling the end of the session and he sighed and sat back, smile gone.

“Thank god that’s over.”

He laughed and glanced over at Charles, nodding in agreement.

“For the night. Tomorrow’s another day.” His chest felt heavy. It wasn’t easy reporting the news. Every day it seemed to get worse.

“This country’s going to Hell in a handbasket.”

“What can we do?” Brant shrugged, knowing worry pinched his brows together. He agreed with Charles. “With the political climate being what it is, now would be the worst time in history to come out.”

“I fear we must.” Charles swayed, his features taking on characteristics of the animal inside. “I can feel a change in the air.”

“So can I, and it’s not a good one.” Brant looked out from the set. “I fear all we hold dear will pay the price.”

“Should we allow the humans to continue? How much of the earth should we let them destroy? How many lives must be lost before we step in to take control?”

“It can’t be like that. If we step in to take control, they will fear us and rightly so. They will hunt us to extinction.” Brant stood, feeling his animal pressing to take control. “I want my clan to be safe.”

He turned abruptly to Charles. They had been best friends since grade school. Charles had been the elder and it hit him first, unexpectedly. They had been camping in the woods behind Brant’s house. One moment he was standing before him throwing marshmallows. The next a large copperhead had been in his place.

Brant had stood stunned. He had known Charles was a shifter. They had an unmistakable scent that humans just didn't give off. There was no hiding it. He just never thought he was a snake. His name should have given him a hint, but as a cub he had never thought of it.

Now it amused him. Charles Iyola, best friend to Brant Baier. In the tongue of their Timucua mothers it meant snake. The next year, Brant’s bear had made an appearance. Regardless of how their animals were natural enemies in the everglades, the two of them had bonded.

Once an area almost exclusively shifters, their town had grown now letting humans outnumber them two to one so of course they stuck together. Sure there were other shifters in school but only Charles and he were in the same class, year after year.

It seemed the bumper crop of babies were either older or younger than the two of them. Not to mention that most shifters home schooled their young. The two of them were in public school due to the fact that neither had a mother at home.

Charles mother had died at his birth. Brant’s mother had been in the military and died on a training mission. Their father’s had done the best they could after they lost their mates. Neither boy had missed having something they didn't know, but growing up with grief stricken fathers had bonded them. A bond that would last a lifetime.

“So do I. But we need to do something to keep them safe.”

“I've been trying.” Brant turned to Charles. “I've been buying land. As much as I can. As much as is not protected. Land is going dirt cheap in Florida.”

“You’re going home.”

“Not yet. I’m buying as much land as I can for my clan.” Brant looked at Charles. “For our clans. Perfect setting for us both.”

It will rest at this point as I finish up a dragon shifter novella I've been working on for way too long! I do keep going back to it and changing it. A bit here and a bit there, slowly adding as I swear I'm not going to touch it!
I love the mystery of the everglades, it's been way too long since I've visited. Just imagine what you'd see if you really looked hard. The thought brings joy to my heart!

What brings joy to yours?

Blogging from A to Z: Happily Ever After

http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/

H is for Happily Ever After

Do you ever wonder if this is true? Thank goodness for the romances that are a series! You get a peek at the previous characters to see if this is true.

If you're a romance reader or writer like me, we read romance for the Happily Ever After (HEA) or even for the Happily for Now (HFN). I want to see the fairy tale come true. I know the story is going to end well. It's getting there that I love.

It's heart breaking to see the characters you grew to love die off. Divorce? Stop the Presses!!! If it's a beloved character, the hero or heroine of a book that's come before never say it! You know it can't happen. They will discover their love again, fight their way through the situation.

If not, well, it would leave a sour taste in my mouth. Tarnish the reason I read romance. Because everyone gets their HEA! It can't change like that. Yes, they die and that is heartbreaking. You mourn right along with the family.

If it doesn't have an HEA, it is NOT romance. Chick lit, fiction call it what you will but it's NOT romance. It may have romantic elements. You can find that on a date, that's not unusual. But for me, don't tout it as a romance.

If it says it's a romance I expect an HEA or HFN. If I don't get it, I won't plan on reading any book by that author that says it is a romance. I don't want to feel cheated. And I would.

It doesn't even matter what type of romance. I love almost all of them. (I'm a little tired of vampires, but I guess I got spoiled when they started to sparkle!)

No matter how fantastic, or down to earth they are, I find something to enjoy in them. I'm not looking for a surprise, just a little escape from my everyday life.

They make me happy!

Blogging from A to Z: Go bag

G is for Go Bag

What is that? Well, for a prepper it all depends. Many prepare for 72 hours. It all depends on what you are prepping for. It call also be known as a Bug Out Bag.

EOTW? End of the World, well 72 hours may not be enough.

But, every mother I know is a prepper.  Think about it. You knew how many diapers and wipes to carry with depending on how long you were planning on being gone. Extra clothes? Check. Food? Check.

Think of a Go Bag as a diaper bag for adults, LOL.

Don't disparage preppers.

Think of it. When SHTF wouldn't you want to be prepared? Not everything you'd need it for is an end of the world scenario.

How many people are unprepared in case of a tornado, fire or earthquake? A backpack staged at the door with essentials will be easily grabbed on your way out the door. You won't have to depend on the help of strangers for a change of clothes or a toothbrush.

It doesn't sound so silly now, does it?

Not all preppers are hard core. Most of them, with their Go Bag ready are the neighbor that nods, the guy with the smile, people you'd never suspect.

So think of what you'd need if you're a couple of days away from home.

Would it hurt to be prepared?

I've been researching for my book and delving deeper into a society and thought process that have always intrigued me. What I'm finding is fascinating.
