Saving Grace ~ Now Live! #NewRelease

Saving Grace
A Dragon’s Fated Heart book 3

The apocalypse had come and gone.
Secrets lie buried waiting to be found.
Dragons are not the only ones awakening to a new world.

Grace has always felt a bit like an outsider, even in her own family. She preferred to do things on her own, ignoring her loneliness. That all changes when Rog barrels into her life, opening her eyes to so much more.

Dragon shifter Rog has seen what problems hiding your inner dragon from your mate brings. Saving his mate from a precarious situation, he changes in front of her. Her awe and hesitant acceptance have him wrapped around her finger in a heartbeat.

Together they find a hidden, cryonic facility. Do they awaken the lost souls hidden in the depth of the mountain? Dare they take the chance of possibly bringing back the diseases to once again ravage their world?

Those are easy questions, but how can Rog explain the mating ritual to change Grace into a dragon involves himself and other dragons giving her more pleasure in a once in a lifetime experience?

Excerpt:

CHAPTER ONE

Ari stirred, sniffing the air. It was different again, cleaner. He wondered how many years had passed since his last awakening. He set his head back on his hatch mate’s back. Raising his head up again, Ari glanced around, his golden eyes whirling with color. He no longer had a desire to sleep.
Ari stood, sniffing and stretching. Looking around, he noticed some of his hatch mates also rising.
“It smells different.” Juevatorj rumbled. Her eyes were whirling, sparkling in the darkness of the cave. “It is clean.”
Ari sniffed the air again and rumbled in agreement. Crag stretched his wingspan to full-length. All around wings were stretched and tested. Air moved quickly with a half a dozen of them waking up to the world again.
“Not everyone is waking up.” Ari peered at the ones still curled up together. They blinked at those of them moving around and closed their eyes, not yet interested in the outside world.
Juevatorj bumped heads with Ari. “That’s okay.”
“Yes, that is okay.” A deeper baritone wound through the cave. All of those awake turned their heads toward the sound. “Come my little ones. I will explain.”
Ari, Juevatorj, Crag, Belisa, Hark and Rog lumbered off after the sound of the voice coming from a tunnel that wandered through the cave. At one point they had to swim through the lava. Warmth wrapped around them and they played until they were sharply called to follow. The second voice was a lighter tenor, firm and insistent; one they knew better than to disobey. At once, they ceased their games and continued the circuitous path, sniffing at the gold and silver, and collecting bits of colored gems they dug out of the walls.
Ari was the first to stumble out. Rearing back, he was shoved from behind, pushed into the light. His eyes whirled in the too-bright sun. He rolled forward, his momentum stopped by a rock. He and his hatch mates chirped in distress, the sudden light harsh against eyes that had spent centuries in darkness, relieved only by the glow of lava.
They all came to rest outside. Deep trilling came from their throats. Their sire and dam hummed at their less than graceful exit.
“Juevatorj, come out of the cave.” Their sire spoke and Juevatorj crept out, belly against the ground and head tucked low. “Do not be afraid.”  They had learned to trust that voice since before even hatching.
“Use your first lids, protect your eyes.” Their dam spoke.
Ari and his siblings rumbled happily. Her voice was one of their first memories in the egg. Their sire and dam spoke often to them, comforting them in the shell. Letting them know how wonderful they were, how beautiful and strong. They greeted them upon each awakening.
Ari blinked and opened his eyes again.  He discovered that the light was now diffused. He trilled in triumph, arching back and spreading his wings in joy.
His siblings learned to control the brightness, too. They bugled forth their joy. So much had been forgotten during their hibernation that they would have to relearn.
“Very good, my little ones.” His sire had a look of contentment on his face. “We can once again join in the world. We have been sleeping a very long time.”
“It is time to explore your new world.” His dam joined in. “We have watched over you while you’ve grown, and kept an eye on the world.”
“We can safely let you go. You need to explore. You need to learn the world around you again.” His sire nodded while he spoke. “The world has been purified. But there are rules you need to follow. You cannot be caught. It would endanger us all. If you want to see the humans, to meet them, you need to make sure you change first. We do not know if man has changed enough to accept us. You are the first group that has awakened. Remember to take supplies you might need to blend in.”
Ari and his siblings looked at each other and nodded. On occasion, he and Crag had snuck out and gone closer to the surface, curious. But in the past few centuries nothing had called to them, nothing more exciting than the lure of gold to add to their stashes, or digging raw gems from the earth. Now Ari’s senses tugged with an insistent pull towards the north.
Crag snuck similar peeks in that direction. They would explore together once more, like they had done as hatchlings.
“You all feel a pull.” They nodded at their dam’s words. “This happens when your mate is born. Follow the direction to where your heart pulls you. They might have years to go to be ready for you, so acquaint yourselves with the world around you.” She proudly gazed at them.
“Be cautious. Be careful. Your mates will need you to be strong and brave in this world. You must fit in to survive.” They nodded, taking his words to heart. Their sire cast a look, the look in Ari and Crag’s direction. “You two. Behave.”
Their dam shook her head, amused exasperation in her eyes.
Ari and Crag’s eyes whirled in amusement.
“Now, you need to explore. Fly over the area, look around. Have a meal, but avoid any humans you see.” Their dam instructed them.
“You do not need to change today. Feed and build your strength and stamina up. Your change will be strong and easy when you are in peak condition.”
“Sire, will they be dragons? Our mates?” Juevatorj asked.
He shrugged. “Maybe. It matters not. Once you mate, they will be.”
Juevatorj ducked her head. Belisa came and wound her neck with Juevatorj.
Crag came up and butted Ari in the head. Common playmates, Crag and Ari had been in plenty of mischief together. Hark and Rog would occasionally join in and the four of them had been kicked out of many places when they were just hatchings due to their rambunctious behavior.
Of all the siblings in the nest, the six of them were the closest. They had been the first half dozen to hatch by days, dragon nests sometimes taking a month to hatch them all. The first week together had bonded them. Though the girls were sometimes easy prey to prank, when they got mad, the boys ran for cover to their dam’s amusement. And so it had gone for years.
Some awakenings, they had explored the outside world but it had been many years. They were not proficient at changing, but well enough if they did it in private. None of them wanted to change in front of the humans. Chances were they would be killed if that happened. Those were the old stories and no one wanted to be the first to test it.
“Come on, Ari.” Crag nodded to the north. “Let’s go take a look around.”
Ari peered at the others. His sire and dam were sitting, tails entwined and watching over them all. Rog and Hark were conferring in whispers to the side.
“All right.” Ari nodded at Crag. “Rog, Hark, did you want to come with?” They looked over at them, faces alight with mischief.
“No.” They both shook their heads. “We are going to explore this side of the mountain.”
Belisa cocked her head at them. She didn’t look like she believed them either. Shrugging it off, knowing they would do what they would do, Ari turned to Crag. With a grin and a run, Ari dove off the mountain, wings spreading to catch the air and cushion his flight. With a roar, Crag followed behind.
They leisurely viewed the world around them. Flying, diving and circling each other and remembering the joy of their many flights, Ari and Crag conversed.
“What do you think they are up to?” Crag circled, diving lower to check out the ground below.
“Who knows?” Ari flew lower. “Look.” He grinned at Crag. “Ready for a meal?”
They flew down, diving in a steep arc. Below were cattle, nice and plump, just the way they liked them. Before they could catch them, Rog and Hark dove out of nowhere, landing on their backs, tumbling the four of them to the ground. The cattle ran for cover, scattering far and wide. The huffs and snickers from Rog and Hark proved that they were amused at getting the drop on Crag and Ari.
Crag stood, flinging Hark from his back, to the further amusement of Rog. He laughed so hard he rolled from Ari’s back without Ari even trying to dislodge him. Ari shook his head.
“I knew you two were up to something. Have you nothing better to do?” Crag sounded disgusted. Rog and Hark grinned and shook their heads.
“No.”
Crag rumbled in aggravation at Hark’s response.
“I thought you were checking out the side of the mountain.” Crag griped. “Why are you bothering us?”
Rog laughed.
“Didn’t think we needed a reason to.” Rog laughed at Crag. “Come on, you knew something was up. We saw the way you looked at us.”
Crag growled.
“Um, I’m hungry and the way the cattle ran when we fell,” Ari eyeballed Rog and Hark, “We’ll have to work for a meal now.” From the snickers Ari knew they didn’t care. He thought it was kind of funny himself. Crag was just upset because he didn’t like anyone getting the jump on him.
Rog and Hark laughed and jumped up, pumping their wings to fly away. “Don’t worry, we’re not hungry. We snagged some goats on our way down.”
Crag was grumbling and Ari didn’t feel like spending the day with his attitude.
“Crag, mellow out or I’ll leave your cranky tail behind.” He jumped up and with a mighty pump, caught air under his wings and glided after a few of the cattle that had settled down. “Come on, let’s eat and explore.”
“Wait for me.” Crag leaped into the air, his wings gave a mighty swoosh and he followed on Ari’s tail.
Ari flew higher, the air currents assisting his glide. He circled the cattle, looking for a tasty specimen. Off to the edge, there were two cattle grazing on the side of the field. He looked back at Crag who nodded. Circling tightly, they dove sharply down, picking up the unsuspecting cattle in their claws and flying away to the mountain.
They circled and landed with their prey in a spot that they had visited often when younger. The trees were bigger, but the rocks, lake and soft ground were still comfortable and big enough for them to relax in comfort. They demolished the cattle and digested them.
Ari burped. A long, drawn-out, satisfied affair.

Look! I'm here again!

So, I've had a few changes happening in my life. Stealing Hope is no longer available other than in paperback for the moment. My rights were reverted to me.
Stealing Hope will be coming back out. I'm taking care of some errors I found, double and triple punctuation, things like that. The story will remain the same. However I will be releasing Stealing Hope back out after I release the prequel.

Rise of the Dragons, the prequel to Stealing Hope is under edits right now. I'm also working on a cover. Here is what I've come up with so far, but I'm looking for opinions. In the mean time, I'll continue edits!

Do you like it? Is the couple too subtle? What needs changing?

On a personal note, my daughter and granddaughter are moving back in with us, so I'm in destruction mode, tearing out plaster walls and putting up drywall for their move back with us. The plaster is buckling and peeling, held together with lots and lots of paint, lol.

Since my hubby and I will be moving to the smaller room so the girls will have the two bedrooms next to each other, I wanted new walls. I forgot what a mess tearing plaster down is! I came out last night after tackling the first wall, covered in dust from head to toe. At least I remember to cover my nose and mouth. But I'm wearing goggles when I go back in. One wall down, three more and the ceiling to go. Pretty sure I'll need a hard hat for that!

EXCERPT

She heard Crag snickering somewhere behind her. She turned and splashed at him too. “I would have saved you. If you’d quit splashing and stand up, you’ll see you could stand.” Ari frowned suddenly. “Oh no. You can’t stand with your leg.” He started toward her and Hope pushed deeper into the water. “Leave me be.” She began treading water, deep enough that she didn’t have to put weight on her leg. Ignoring both of them, she sank under water to get her hair out of her face. When she popped out Hope screamed. Ari was right there, grinning at her. “What the heck?” “I was just making sure you were okay.” His eyes twinkling at her. No way was she falling for that, no matter how attractive it made him. “And I brought you the soap. How will you get clean without it?” “Fine. Give me the soap.” Ari held it back out of her reach. “No. You’ll drop it out here.” Hope growled at him. Yes, she sure did. Hope didn’t know quite how to take his teasing, if he was teasing. Ari laughed. “You can come in closer and I’ll help hold you while you wash or I can wash you here while you float.” Hope didn’t answer, but she swam in closer to shore. No way was she letting him run his hands all over her.

Excerpt

Death crept into the castle. Mara could feel its darkness pressing her down. As she walked to her father's bedchamber, the thought of marrying a man she did not love weighed heavily on her. All the invitations had been sent out months ago. Just as her life was beginning to almost feel normal, her father, King Philip, had fallen ill along with the court of Casmerelda and much of the kingdom. The second wave of the plague violently spread, leaving a trail of death and burning corpses for the living to clean up.
Her father had been bedridden for three days. His fever spiked and his skin glistened. He grew delirious, falling in and out of consciousness. As much as she despised him for what he’d done to her sister’s boyfriend, he was still her father. She didn’t want to be left alone.
“You must marry Astin at once.”
Mara cringed. “I can’t.” Her lips hidden as she wore a piece of ivory cloth against her nose and mouth, the slightest bit of protection from the disease that had taken over the kingdom. “I don’t love him. Please don’t do this to me.”
“Don’t be selfish.” The words struggled to reach his lips. He coughed and heaved, his chest rising and falling quickly as his pulse raced. “I’ll be with your mother soon…”
“You’ll be dead.”
Taking in several deep breaths, he opened his mouth, his words coming out as a whisper. “You will be reigning queen. Mara, you must act the part. Marry Astin and forge an alliance with the country of Morro, for the sake of Casmerelda. Your people need you.”
“I need you,” Mara said, gripping her father’s hand. She frowned, studying the tips of his fingers, a blackened hue lacing his skin.
“You shouldn’t touch me.” He tried to pull away, unsuccessfully. Her grip remained tight, but more significantly, he’d grown weak from the disease ravaging his body.
“I haven’t been infected, and I’ve been at your bedside every night.” Mara ordered the servants to bring more water and rags. It had done little good to break his fever or alleviate the discomfort he must have been experiencing, but it was all she could think of to help.
“Marry Astin.” His words were rough slipping past his lips. He wheezed, trying to speak, but Mara rested a hand upon his chest.
“Don’t.” She didn’t want to have this conversation again.
“For the sake of the kingdom,” he said, pleading with her.
Mara refused to answer. Marrying Astin wasn’t what she wanted. “I have no desire to be queen so young. You will pull through, do you hear me?”
He’d fallen into a deep slumber, unable to answer her.

Ruth SilverAWhat are you writing now?
I’m currently writing under the pen name Ravyn Rayne. I’ve been working on developing several romantic series for adult readers. I’ve also recently released another YA title, Stolen Art, released by Lazy Day Publishing.

Do you have plans to continue the Royal Reaper saga?
I’ve definitely left it open ended to continue the series, but I have no immediate plans at the moment for the next book. I feel that a spin-off would probably be more appropriate, given the ending of Forget Me Knot.

Do you write full-time?
Yes! I write about 25k words a week when I’m able to write without distractions. It also helps if I have a story in mind!

Favorite singer?
I love Taylor Swift and also Katy Perry.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
I’d love to visit Europe. Specifically I want to see Paris and Rome.

EXCERPT

He smoothed her hair and rubbed a thick tendril between his thumb and forefinger. “I am Gunnar.” He pronounced the name Goo-nar.
An emblem of the sun, surrounded by a circle, had been branded on the back of his powerful hand. Penny touched the scar while he held a length of her hair, recognizing Freyr’s sacred insignia from her textbooks. “The pain must have been excruciating.” Without thinking, she lifted the old wound to her mouth and laid kisses along its perimeter before pressing a kiss to the icon inside.
Tremors vibrated across her lips when they touched the ancient symbol and her body tingled with the contact. The brand grew warm and then hot against her mouth, though it did not burn. She ran her tongue over the thick scars to erase the heat, and then licked the center, finishing with a tiny swirl.
Gunnar’s gasp of surprise was the last thing she expected when she lifted her head. He released her hair and drew away.
“I’m sorry. I don’t know what got into me. Have I offended you?” She’d always been popular with men, and comfortable around them, but her behavior with Gunnar was bold, even for her. She sat up. “Am I under some kind of spell?”
Gunnar shook his head. “I used my powers to heal you, but your free will remains intact.”
She searched his face for clues about what to do next, because desire shone behind the wary expression in his eyes. Something else shone there, too. Gratitude. Penny waited for Gunnar’s reply without letting go of his disfigured hand.
He said, “Kindness isn’t something I’m used to finding. Perhaps you’d be less inclined toward compassion if you knew what I’d done to deserve this brand of servitude.”
She reached out and draped an arm around his neck to bring him closer. Their gazes locked and held. Gunnar’s eyes were like pools of ice blue water that pulled her in and down.
Her breathing slowed while the sound of her heartbeat rushed blood through her ears. “I am Penelope. And if you’re from Alfheim, I know who and what you are. I just don’t understand why you’re here.” How could she deserve his rare, benevolent gifts? She was just an ordinary woman from an ordinary town, barely scraping by.
His warm breath grazed her cheek in shallow rushes, lifting goose bumps across her skin. His wide, firm mouth smelled of sweet ground parsley and fresh-picked mint. “Sometimes we get what we need, simply because we ask. That’s the beauty and power of the unexpected.”

“Listen, kid, I don’t care what you believe in. It’s not for me to say what’s true and untrue, real or unreal. My assignment was you. You get to be one of us, if you want it. Otherwise, you move on, life is over, kaput.” Ophelia backed away from the stranger. For the first time, she realized she didn’t feel cold and wasn’t shivering. Is this what being dead was like? “One of you?” “A grim reaper.” He held out his hand to properly introduce himself. “Edon Montgomery, head reaper and old soul.”

Author Interview

Do you have any plans to write a spin-off for Aberrant? Yes! I am currently working on an untitled project that is a prequel, spin-off. I haven't spoken much about it, but I will say there is plenty of action and a world to explore that we've barely touched in the Aberrant trilogy.

What are you currently working on? I've got several writing projects underway. Forget Me Knot (Royal Reaper 2) is in edits right now with an expected Spring 2015 release. I'm also writing steamy adult fiction under the name Ravyn Rayne, which will be available this year as well. You can find those projects on Ravyn Rayne Reads.

Do you have a full-time job? Writing and marketing my own novels is my full-time job. It involves far more than 40 hours a week, but I love it, so I don't mind.

Release Blast ~ Born to Magic by David Wind

Born To Magic
by David Wind
Series: Tales of Nevaeh: Volume 1
Genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy
Release Date: February 15, 2015

Welcome to Nevaeh: a world where technology no longer exists, but magic does.

Long ago, a mythical nation known as 'America' died in the violence and radiation of the terrorist wars. Now their descendants dwell in a world of ritual and magic where ten dominions struggle for supremacy while a dark power rises to threaten them all.

In Nevaeh, where men are blessed with great strength and women have both strength and psychic abilities, one woman has been chosen to be Nevaeh's savior, Areenna—the only daughter of the King of Freemorn.

Barely eighteen, Areenna's psychic abilities—her magic— are already stronger than that of most women. But when Areenna is called to The Island, a place where all women of psychic power must go, but from where only some return, she soon learns the fate of her world is in her hands.

Accompanied by Mikaal, the son of the High King of Nevaeh, the two undertake a perilous journey to a place of great power, in an effort to save Nevaeh from the oncoming darkness, and these dark and evil forces will do everything in their power to stop Areenna from reaching her destination.

Areenna’s journey is filled with unimaginable dangers as they cross through three of Nevaeh's ten dominions, and through the haunted wastelands and badlands filled with the mutated survivors of the nuclear holocaust to fight their way to what will either claim both their lives or give them the powers to save their world.

“There is no choice.” Cupping the sides of his head, the High King of Nevaeh held himself as if trying to ease a headache of astonishing proportions.

“There is always a choice.” The High Queens’s voice was as soothing as was the hand stroking his back. While smaller than most men of Nevaeh, the king was broad across the chest and shoulders, narrow at the hips with powerful legs and arms. Yet none would have pictured him a king for his size combined with the delivery of his words served to make him appear slow-witted. He, however, was far from slow-witted. He considered every word he spoke carefully before allowing it to pass his lips.

His special combination of strength and intelligence had allowed him to defeat the sorceresses controlled and led by the Masters of the Circle of Afzal—the leaders of the shadowy empire across the sea. These witches had held Nevaeh in virtual slavery, using the fighting between the ten dominions to keep their Dark Masters’ strength high—for they fed not upon earthly food, but by keeping the rulers of Nevaeh at each other’s throats, living and growing in the power created by the dark energies born from the fighting.

By defeating the Afzaleem, he became the first person to unite the dominions of Nevaeh under a single rule while at the same time denying the Circle their Nevaen puppets.

The king lifted his head to look into the gray eyes of his mate. “There is no choice,” he repeated. “We must keep the trust and willingness of all rulers to allow themselves and their families to be led rather than forced.”

“There are still those who resist what we do to help them,” she said.

“No, it is because those few have no faith in me,” he whispered. While his words were simple, they were true.

“Perhaps…Yet I know there will be one who comes to your aid, when the time is right,” she whispered. “I have foreseen it in my dreams, My Lord. You have changed much since you became high king and you ask the people to do the same. And remember, what follows this change is what you seek to guide, not the change itself. The rest will take more time than you and I have, which is why you must wait for the right person.”

“How long is the wait? We both know the situation grows dire. The lords of the ten will start feuding again as the remnants of the Circle try to rise. The Afzaleem are all but dead. But we know the Circle will find new vassals to fill with darkness…if they have not done so already. Soon there will begin fighting. The people will be easily swayed should the dark power find a way to regain a foothold…and such can only happen when dominion fights dominion. They almost won, and they will try again—they will never stop. How long must the wait be?” he repeated, not seeking an answer but putting forth the question to the very air itself. “Days? Weeks? Years?”

In from the window floated the voice of their sixteen year old son, Mikaal, as he trained for combat in the courtyard below. “This person will come. It will not be…overly long, my husband, my…Lord. It will happen—perhaps not in the way you think it should, but it will come about the way it must.”

I love a good fantasy and Born to Magic is definitely that! It caught my interest as it is set in a post-apocalyptic word, a fantastical and unusual world. We all know that nuclear weapons will change us and not necessarily for the better. Perhaps not the for the worst either. David Wind creates a wildly fascinating world that I felt totally immersed in.
Areenna and Mikaal were interesting characters with unexpected depths. Only the first of their adventures, Areenna and Mikaal grow and find unexpected and complementary powers the bind them closer together.
An interesting premise, Born to Magic is a fascinating look at a world that changed and was torn apart only to regroup and grow strong once again.

I live and write in a small village about thirty miles upstate of NYC, and share my home with my wife, Bonnie and our dog Alfie, an apricot poodle.

When I began writing in 1980, I had no idea where I was headed. Since then, I've published thirty-five novels, thirty-three of them with traditional publishers, but I decided I wanted more freedom than the traditional publishers would allow and began a new phase in my life as an Independent Author.

Sci-Fi & fantasy has always been my most favorite genre.   My first novel in the genre, Queen Of Knights was a medieval / historical fantasy and reached #2 on the Amazon.com bestseller lists for historical fantasy and medieval fantasy, and my sci-fi of parallel worlds, The Others, received wide acclaim.

M first Independent novel, Angels In Mourning, was my 'homage' to the old time private detective books of the late 40's, 50's and 60's.  I used to love to sneak them from my parents’ night-tables and read them as a young boy.  Angels is a modern day take on the old style hardboiled detective.  Angels In Mourning won the Amazon.com Book of the Month Reader's Choice Award shortly after it was published.

My most current thriller, The Cured, was written with Terese Ramin. The idea for this Medical Thriller came shortly after the death of a close friend.  I couldn't help but wonder about the medication....

My previous suspense thrillers are The Hyte Maneuver, (a Literary guild alternate selection); As Peace Lay Dying, Conspiracy of Mirrors, And Down Will Come Baby, Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep ,and Shadows.
